R.I.P Michael Chapdelaine
Michael Chapdelaine was a very well-known classical guitarist for the last few decades. He began as a classical guitar student that played for Andre Segovia, and was scolded in one of the master classes for changing Segovia’s fingerings.
Personally, I was a bit shocked at Michael’s reaction to Segovia’s attitude in that exchange. Of course, everybody knows that Segovia had a very dictatorial teaching style, which made it quite difficult for students to perform the repertoire in a way that did not fit Segovia‘s personal expectations.
After Michael was scolded by Segovia and sent off the stage, he responded with kindness and humility, and I was shocked and actually disappointed that he did not stand up for himself as a Musician and Guitarist. Without a doubt, Segovia would never get away with that kind of attitude in a master class today.
After the incident, Michael gradually left the Classical Guitar scene and created a career as a fingerstyle guitarist of different styles, Classical included.
Throughout the decades, his performances and his fingerstyle arrangements delighted thousands of guitarist and music lovers alike.
I was very saddened to learn about his passing today. He will be missed as a guitarist, a musician, and as a human being. I did not know Michael personally, but it was clear from his interviews, from his attitude, from his interactions, and especially from his music, that he was a kind and caring human being. The world of music and the world of the Guitar lost a great one today. I am personally saddened to see him go. Rest in peace, Michael.
