Shure Demo MVX2U SM58 PG58

I have been using Shure products for many years, mostly for my public school performances. This is a combined demo of three products from the brand that I recommend enthusiastically.

Shure MVX2U Audio Interface

Shure MVX2U Audio Interface

The new MVX2U Audio Interface is one of the most versatile audio tools I’ve seen in a long time. Recently released by the brand, it is a pocket-size device that allows users to connect their microphone to a computer via XLR connection. My favorite feature here is the simplicity of the device and the ease of use: two inputs (IN and OUT), compatible connection to most computers without the need of additional adaptors, and it even includes a headphone jack if you need that sort of thing. Also, the device will literally fit in your shirt pocket and in your guitar case.

Shure SM58

Shure SM58 Microphone

The SM58 microphone is one of the most commonly used not only within the brand but across all other brands. This is definitely a flagship microphone for anyone who is looking for a quality sound while speaking or singing. I usually use two SM58 microphones on the stage during my school concerts, for announcers and for solo singers. I would not recommend using these for larger groups of singers. Instead, you should use a condenser microphone for that type of sound.

Shure PG59 Wireless System

The PG58 Wireless System includes a wireless microphone (9V battery operated) that sends a signal to a base that is plugged into your PA system or amplifier. I’ve been using this wireless system for some of our school assemblies, not necessarily music assemblies, where presenters need to address a large number of students and staff and also be able to move around freely, without being tied to a microphone cable. We’ve had great success with this and the battery lasted 3-4 hour-long events. It does help that the microphone uses three led settings: Green for ON, Orange for Standby, Red for LowBattery.

In the video below, I am using three sound sources for comparison: the built-in microphone of my iPhone 14, the SM58, and the PG58. I hope you can hear the difference between the three setups. I will say that when using the microphones live, you should keep them much closer to your face than I did … I kept the SM58 and PG58 about two feet away from my face, and in the recording this resulted in some background “hiss” noise, perhaps too much with the PG58. I highly recommend keeping both the SM58 and the PG58 close to your mouth (about 2 inches away) when using them live.

Tony Evans Study Bible

For my sound comparison, I read two beautiful verses (Isaiah 64:8-9), using my recently-acquired Tony Evans Study Bible, written in the Christian Standard Bible translation, which I am starting to like very much. Listen to this translation of this verse and let me know if you like it, in the comments.
